Million Members Celebration: On October 5, 2019, DAR surpassed a total of one million members who have joined the Society since our founding in 1890. Welcome! The DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to keeping America strong by promoting patriotism, preserving history and supporting education programs. Service DAR members volunteer more than 250,000 hours annually in support of veterans, active duty military and their families and communities, award thousands of dollars in scholarships and financial aid each year to students, and support schools for underserved children with annual donations exceeding one million dollars. Who As one of the most inclusive genealogical societies in the country, DAR boasts 170,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the United States and internationally. Any woman 18 years or older-regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background-who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution, is eligible for membership. Any woman 18 years or older who can prove lineal, bloodline descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence is eligible to join the DAR. She must provide documentation for each statement of birth, marriage and death, as well as of the Revolutionary War service of her Patriot ancestor. A complete list of accepted Revolutionary War service DAR volunteers in chapters throughout the country can provide guidance and assistance with the application process. Admission to membership in the National Society is through a chapter or as a Member-At-Large. Don’t know where to start? Fill out a Pedigree Chart (PDF) as completely as you can and bring it with you when you meet with the chapter representative. She will be able to guide you through the application process.
